18. I believe that education is an investment in our future. One of the most effective ways we can bolster the already solid work of our teachers and our schools is to place more resources in early childhood education. Studies by the business community have found that this early intervention is effective not only for school readiness but also greatly improves the likelihood for success in higher education.

20. While on the Cannon Falls School Board we successfully passed two operating referendums. This allowed us to stay in the black and remodel our science education rooms. Student interest in the sciences improved as a result of our investment.

22. Higher education is fundamental to the vitality of Minnesota’s economy. Our colleges and universities provide business and industry with employees who keep Minnesota competitive in the global market. However, over the past decade tuition at our state institutions has risen by more than 15 percent. We cannot afford to price students out of pursuing higher education and losing our state’s competitive edge.

31. If you feel that our health care system costs more than it should, then we agree. Americans pay twice as much, or more, per capita, for health services and insurance when compared to citizens of other developed countries. Yet, we have lower life spans, higher infant mortality, and generally receive a lot less for our money. One of the biggest myths in the United States is that we have a free private market in health care and those other countries don’t. Please, let me help you improve the quality of our health care system.

42. The energy crunch has us all talking about global climate change. For two decades the United States hasn’t taken leadership in multilateral international negotiations to deal with climate change. Other countries took the leadership role and we didn’t like that. So now, we’re just beginning to play catch up on one of the biggest issues in the world. Hollywood’s versions are playing on the big screen and it’s either scaring people or making people laugh.

44. The reality is parent’s trimmed back summer vacations because of high pump cost. Seniors on a fixed income are using window fans instead of air conditioning. And for kids, the melting ice caps mean the polar bears could become extinct.

46. The environment is vulnerable to man’s actions: we are capable of upsetting nature’s checks and balances. You, the consumer, should have more choices that positively impact the future.

58. Jobs are the foundation of local communities. The difference between generations has been the increased education and the types of jobs people are able to hold. I want people to have opportunities to pull themselves up through education and a better job.  Supporting public education, and working toward a stronger economy are my top priorities.

68. Goodhue County property owners have seen their taxes rise significantly. Over the last 10 years 30 percent of the taxes formerly paid by Xcel Energy are now paid by homeowners. Now the company is seeking more tax breaks! In the past four years statewide Republican-led changes have resulted in an increase of more than $2 billion in homeowner property taxes.

73. The bluff-land region is rated one of the top ten most threatened scenic attractions in America. It is subject to environmentally degrading development pressure.

84. 7. Improve transportation safety
85. Transportation gridlock is a significant issue in the metropolitan area, and the safety of our roads is an issue here. Tax shifts have benefitted the Twin Cities and Rochester, and now there is a fairness issue throughout the state. This must be addressed from a fairness perspective.
